A powerful poem from Nely Cab + GIVEAWAY

Dear Readers,

Everyday hundreds of thousands of people are bullied. Over 160,000 kids alone skip school on a daily basis to escape their own living nightmare. In 2010, 1 in 6 school kids reported being a victim of bullying. In 2015, that number has risen to 1 in 4. Just as bullying numbers have risen, so have suicide related deaths and depression associated with it. Bullying, however, isn’t limited to school. Bullies exist on the internet, at work, and yes, even at home. While some suffer only emotional torture, others are forced to endure the physical pain of their tormentor. If you’ve been a victim of bullying, I’m sure you can relate. If you’ve never been bullied, consider yourself lucky.

In observance of Anti Bullying Awareness Month, I’ve written a poem in hopes of conveying the distress a victim of bullying suffers. But before I leave you to read this, please remember that stick and stones may break bones, but words can break a person for life.

Be Kind to One Another,

Nely Cab

DON’T LOOK AT ME

The rage in your eyes,

The tight fist formed in your hand

The hatred in your expression,

I fail to understand

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve destroyed the meaning of joy for me

I walk in the shadows,

Of the lies you speak,

The poison,

The acid,

The terror that makes me weak

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve destroyed all the years of pride in me

A handful of hair,

A bloody, raw lip,

A stream of black tears,

What else will you rip?

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve destroyed the beauty inside me.

The crowd’s gathered ‘round,

Not one takes my side,

I see your satisfied smirk,

With the blows that collide

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve destroyed the person that used to live in me.

My hand pleads for pity,

Your foot replies with a kick,

I close my eyes,

Taking each painful lick.

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve erased the dreams I had for me.

Wounds fresh,

Scars engraved,

Deserted emotions,

All friendships betrayed

Don’t look at me,

There’s nothing to see

Don’t look at me,

You’ve taken it all from me.

My lip is healed,

My hair grown back,

But the will to live,

Is what I lack.
