The book starts with Alana having been labeled a murderer and having been sentenced to death upon her 18th birthday. She describes how the murders were described to her (quite graphic including the killing of her younger sister) Several descriptions of other crimes (including murder and a bombing and its aftermath) described. Scenes of intense fighting between Veronika and Alana including using available objects as weapons The warden commits a violent and shocking murder.

Generally a fair amount of pretty bad language throughout (which considering where the book is set is not too surprising).
Romance/Sensuality

Some kissing with Daniel and Alana in flashbacks which gradually gets more intimate and becomes a lot more intimate once Alana's memories return. They eventually end up having sex. There is talk about some gay underage sex which resulted in one of the participants being sent to jail because of it.
Drugs/Alcohol/Smoking

Daniel orders a pint at the bar and has a drink of whiskey later in his office.

Other: This book is set in the not too distant future and offers suggestions about how crime and punishment could be handled.  The book has a generally mature theme throughout that may not be suitable for younger teenagers.
