A fresh start at college is exactly what Kate needs to ease the burden of her family secrets. When she meets the confident and charming Aaron Jackson, she weaves a new history for herself to fit into his seemingly perfect life. But the past refuses to stay where it belongs, causing a rift between their contrasting worlds.
When Ben reappears in Kate’s life, she is only pulled deeper into the childhood that she’s tried to forget. Driven by the abuse and pain that still lingers within him, Ben seeks Kate’s help in making a change. But in this journey for retribution, lines blur between courage, justice, and revenge.
Bound by their shared and damaged youth, Kate is forced to choose sides, and fast. The final act is almost here, and time is running out.
Talk of physical abuse with children bad enough that a leg was broken / waterboarding / tied to a chair so tightly the ropes cut in. The gand attacks foster houses with bad reputations. It starts with more innocent things such as eggs being thrown etc but ends up with one of the hosues set of fire with children trapped inside. Definite Gang mentality. Told foster carer is kidnapped and threatened. There is a farily large amount of violence both threateded and exectued. Threats made with a gun and 2 attacks with glass bottles being smashed over heads.
Talk of Aaron being with a lot of girls and mention of one kiss at a party. Some light kissing with Aaron and Kate earlier in the book and some more intense kissing later on.
There is talk of a foster care worker abusing the children's medicine (Stealing it and then using it to get high). Talk of 'Partying' over the summer. Luke (14) is getting involved with a gang selling illegal drugs at a park. Talk of the Mom and her drug addiction and how she chose drugs over caring for her children and an aunt that died form an overdose. Father had drugs in his car that resulted in Kate being arrested. Lots of talk of the father relapsing several times. The father OD's and is found in time to be taken to the hospital. It isn't mentioned which drugs are used but from the descriptions I would think it would have to be some of the harder drugs.
Supernatural Characters: NONE
This book deals with situations involving child abuse and may be upsetting / unsuitable for younger readers. This is the follow up book to the YA story Lingering Echoes but the characters involved have since grown and are at college which should be taken into consideration when deciding if this book is appropriate. If the previous book has been read then there would be nothing that I would consider unsuitable in this sequel.
