Slices of Gabrielle Arrowsmith’s Favorite Holiday Gathering
My favorite holiday get-together is when my family and my cousin’s family goes to my grandparents house. We typically do this before or after Christmas, since all of us twenty-somethings are busy working or running to several Christmas celebrations on Christmas day.
My family lived with my grandparents for many years, and my cousins actually lived in the same house as well for a while. Later on, all three families (my grandparents, my family, and my cousin’s family) built houses on the same plot of land. We are a large bunch when we get together, yet we are an intimate group because of all the time we spend together.
Everyone works so hard preparing elaborate meals on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, so one tradition we have for this get together is that the dinner we enjoy together is delivery pizza. Makes for an easy clean up!
After dinner we distribute socks which we all open together and then ‘draw-names’ and other gifts for which it is our tradition to open one present at a time from oldest to youngest. This means that my grandpa gets to open his present first. Most of the time, he has chosen a present and has it halfway open before all of the gifts have been distributed. As everyone else in the family takes their turn, we constantly remind grandpa that it’s not his turn. If a present is in his hand, it’s slowly and secretly getting opened. This is one of the many causes for laughter during this gathering.
This year, we also get to enjoy the pleasures of having the first great-grandchild in the family. What a gift he is, and a whole other reason that I can’t wait for my favorite slice of the holiday season to arrive.
I hope you and your loved ones share laughter and peace this holiday season! I’d love to hear about some of your favorite traditions!

Escaping will be difficult and dangerous. Citizens are bound to their county by sophisticated chip implants that deliver shocks to those who dare to cross the electric barrier. Sydney is very clever, but her trickery is limited against the all-seeing eyes of technology.
